Football Australia has confirmed the 20-player squad for the CommBank Young Socceroos’ upcoming SBS Cup in Japan in December.

The CommBank Young Socceroos will kick off their tournament against Spain on December 18, before taking on Japanese domestic side Shizuoka Prefecture on December 20 and wrapping up the trip against Japan on December 21.

Richard Garcia will lead the squad in the role of Head Coach, with usual Head Coach Trevor Morgan unable to attend the tournament due to his commitments as Football Australia’s Interim Technical Director.

The squad, selected by Morgan and Garcia, comprises of only players playing in Australia and Japan, with 13 debutants making the trip with the squad.

Garcia said he was looking forward to getting the squad together again after a successful year which saw victory in the AFC U20 Asian Cup 2025 and some promising performances in the FIFA U20 World Cup 2025.

“The CommBank Young Socceroos have had a hugely successful year, having won the AFC U20 Asian Cup, and we are looking to compete and finish the year strong with the next crop of Young Socceroos in the SBS Cup in Japan.

“We will be playing some top teams from around the world and it is a completely new squad of players looking to make an impact as they continue their development.

“We will be looking to see how this new group of players can cope with a hectic international schedule and how they adjust to the demands and increased quality at U20 level against some very strong opponents.”

Having established himself as one of the best young central defenders in Australia, the sky is seemingly the limit for Western Sydney’s Alex Bonetig. aleagues.com.au caught up with the 23-year-old ahead of the new Isuzu UTE A-League campaign.

Only six outfield players tallied more minutes in the Isuzu UTE A-League 2024-25 regular season than Western Sydney Wanderers’ imperious young defender Alex Bonetig managed last term.

In fact, if you drill down into the numbers even more so then you’ll see the 23-year-old was the second-youngest player on that list last season behind Adelaide United’s 21-year-old star Ethan Alagich.

So what’s the key to his consistency?

“I’d say, firstly, the people around me, in terms of the coaching staff, and also the boys on the pitch, because it’s not just me defending, it’s it’s the back four, it’s a keeper, it’s everyone – the whole 11 on that pitch,” Bonetig told aleagues.com.au ahead of a Round 1 showdown against defending champions Melbourne City on October 18.

“So a lot of gratitude to them and then obviously the coaching side. We’d spend a lot of time after sessions, going through clips, even on the pitch, doing extras, whether it’s just me and Panta (defensive partner Anthony Pantazopoulos), especially at the back end of the season, going through things.

“I think all those little one-percenters assisted with the strengthening for that last probably 13 or 14 games we went unbeaten.”

Bonetig started all 26 of the Wanderers games in season 2024-25 and racked up a whopping 2,295 minutes of game time in the process, a total which would have been even bigger were it not for his decision to withdraw himself from the action at half-time of Western Sydney’s final game of the season due to an injury issue.

Alongside the aforementioned Pantazopoulos, Bonetig formed one of the best defensive pairings in the Isuzu UTE A-League last season, as their ‘chalk and cheese’ characteristics meshed perfectly to help propel Alen Stajcic’s side back into the Finals Series.

In Panatazopoulos, you have the aggressor. A self-confessed ‘old-school’ defender who relishes the physical contest. In Bonetig, you have the low-key leader. The composed central defender who quietly dominates in the air whilst also excelling with the ball at his feet, as is highlighted by the fact that he was one of the competition’s best when it came to progressing the football from within his own half last season.

Together they’ve quickly formed a formidable defensive duo and after spending some time in Bonetig’s company, you quickly realise the 23-year-old doesn’t miss a beat.

If he makes a mistake, he wants to know why so it doesn’t happen again. And if he’s done something well then there’s every chance it’s because he’s accounted for that situation arising.

Extras at training help, as do countless hours of analysis sessions with the Wanderers coaching staff. However the key to Bonetig’s improvement comes from watching and learning, with one current global superstar playing a central role.

“I think you’ve got to watch football to learn,” said Bonetig.

“Because I know where I am, I’m not a complete footballer yet. I’m not the best of the best, and so if I’m not the best, then I’ve got to work at something, right?

“So watching, for instance, my favourite player Virgil Van Dijk as I’m a Liverpool supporter. He’s a centre back and he’s obviously right-footed, but he plays in my position.

“So watching players like that, and usually full matches, because you can’t watch enough with just highlights, but seeing them in certain situations helps me a lot.

“I rarely just watch the game to just enjoy it. Most of the time, especially in the Premier League, I’ll make sure I watch those centre-backs, watch their mannerisms, even the way they lead.

“But also on the ball, other decision making in certain situations, because you find you do get in similar situations in your own games, and if I’m not exposed to them on the pitch, then at least I know what I can get out of those situations.

“I can’t stress enough, especially for young footballers, how important it is to watch the best, but also your own games and reflect on them, to learn and get better.”

“I think you’ll find most footballers from even in the A-League or grassroots, whatever, they’ll watch a game, but they won’t watch to learn or pick up little bits.

“And you can watch all you want, but if you’re not watching with intent and looking to pick up on things and learn from things, study the game, then you kind of feel you’re wasting your time.

“It’s probably the easiest form of learning, in my opinion, just sitting on the couch and watching a game, but watching a game with a bit of purpose, you know?”

As is often the case when you have an impressive season in the Isuzu UTE A-League, teams from overseas begin to circle and take a keen interest.

Intriguingly though there was another high-ranking football official who took a keen interest in the his performances; CommBank Socceroos head coach Tony Popovic, who in June selected Bonetig to be a part of his pre-World Cup qualifying training camp in Abu Dhabi.

“Obviously I was a late call-up and I’d be lying if I say I wasn’t a bit nervous,” said Bonetig when discussing his Socceroos camp experience.

“I found out the night before and flew in the next day, but I had a good group of boys around me, especially (Brandon) Borrello, (Alex) Gersbach and (Nicolas) Milanovic at the time (who were) all teammates.

“Especially Borrello, he’s been in that set-up a couple of times now, and he helped me around a bit and helped me settle in.

“But I’d say that the big difference is just every little detail, you know, as you get to obviously the highest level – the Socceroos. So every little detail they’re looking at.

Bonetig during the Socceroos training camp

“It’s not enough to just perform on the pitch, you’ve got to perform off the pitch as well. Whether it be the way you shake a hand or what you’re eating, having enough salad or getting enough sleep, taking your supplements, stuff like that, which at that level, do make a difference.

“You know, it’s not enough to just rock up on the pitch, you’ve got to do all the preparations beforehand. So, yeah, it was an amazing experience. The boss over there was great with me and I learnt a lot from him.”

He continued: “Both himself and Hayden Fox, (It was) more so with the whole team, it wasn’t individual stuff, but just simple things like body positioning and stuff like that.

“Where before, I might get caught out in those situations, now, because you practice it over there, you come back and you pick up on those things.

“Obviously you’ve got the coaches, but you’ve got players who were playing in the Premier League last year. In my position (there was) Cameron Burgess. He comes in. You’re like, okay, that’s where I’ve got to be. That’s how I’ve got to perform. That’s what I’ve got to do.

“You know players like that. I’m 23 (and) I’m looking up to that.”

Now armed with the knowledge that the Socceroos hierarchy are keeping tabs on him as well as several overseas clubs, Bonetig is primed for another Isuzu UTE A-League campaign.

However season 2025-26 brings with it an added layer of intrigue for Bonetig, given this season younger brother Liam will also be playing in the competition having signed for reigning Champions Melbourne City on a multi-year deal from Scottish giants Celtic.

And who should the Wanderers be playing in Round 1? Why Melbourne City, of course.

“To be honest, I think we’re both excited to play against each other, but we rarely talk about football with each other, because we like To talk about other things,” laughed Bonetig.

“When the 90 minutes happen, I don’t care, you know? I’m gonna play and I’m gonna win.

He added: “On and off the pitch we’re brothers but we rarely talk about football. To be honest, not much has been said so far. And I like it like that. I think he likes it like that.

“We’re focusing on our own games. It’s like any other game. You can call it a brotherly rivalry, but we’re not looking at like that.

“I think maybe a few things under our breath might be said,” he laughed.

“A few little touches or whatever you know, like trying to get him offside or whatever. But no, I’m looking forward to it. Hopefully I can get a goal!”

The Western Sydney Wanderers Girls Academy U14s etched their names into the history books, lifting their first-ever Youth League One Championship trophy with a 3–1 win over APIA Leichhardt FC.

The Wanderers made the perfect start, striking inside the opening minute when Ally Wrzynski’s driven cross forced an own goal to give her side an early lead.

The first half proved a fierce contest with chances at both ends, but the Wanderers’ backline stood strong, ensuring a 1–0 advantage at the break.

After halftime, confidence grew as the Red & Black began dictating possession and playing with their trademark style.

Their dominance paid off when Eleah Hewitt delivered a dangerous cross from the left, with Grace Brian reacting sharply to tuck home the second goal.

APIA Leichhardt FC threatened a comeback with a quick counter to reduce the deficit to 2–1, but the Wanderers’ response was immediate.

Off the bench and into the spotlight, Ruby Drosos made a stunning impact, unleashing a strike from outside the box that deflected past the keeper to restore the two-goal cushion.

From there, the Wanderers controlled proceedings until the final whistle, sparking jubilant celebrations as the squad secured a milestone moment for the Girls Academy.

The Western Sydney Wanderers Girls Academy have been crowned U16 Champions, capping off a remarkable season with a thrilling 2-1 victory over Manly FC in the Grand Final.

From the opening whistle, the Wanderers stamped their intent, creating wave after wave of attacking opportunities.

Clever build-up play from Frida Karaberis, Brigette White, and Sophie Aungle set up early chances for Alara Turkkan and Grace McCreery, only to be denied by Manly’s goalkeeper.

At the other end, Helayna Gibson stood tall between the posts, producing key saves to keep the score locked at 0-0 heading into the break.

The breakthrough came in the 63rd minute when Kyani Dos Santos unleashed a precise volley to put the Wanderers in front.

Manly quickly responded, levelling the score with a free kick from distance. With neither side able to break the deadlock, the contest entered extra time.

In a decisive moment, Brigette White was fouled inside the penalty area, and Madena Moussa stepped up with nerves of steel to bury the spot-kick and restore the Wanderers’ lead.

With just seven tense minutes remaining, the defensive quartet of Annabella Scibberas, Charley Fredericks, Charlotte Ellery, and Zofiya Gwozdecky held firm, while Daria Raguz played a pivotal role linking play through midfield.

Players, coaches, and supporters alike celebrated a historic moment in the Girls Academy’s journey, one that will be remembered for years to come.

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL Women’s side have finished their season on a positive note, storming home with a 3-1 win over the Newcastle Jets at the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility following a strong second half showing from the Red & Black.

The Wanderers who were staring down the barrel of finishing the season winless since round thirteen, their last victory coming against the Jets, trouncing the side 5-0 in a dominant display at Wanderers Football Park, were determined to finish the season strong.

The first half was a tight contest, with neither side willing to give an inch. Both teams managed to find promising positions in the final third, but defences stood tall and goalkeepers remained untested. Chances came and went, but the deadlock remained at the break.

The second stanza, however, told a completely different story. The Wanderers emerged with a renewed intensity and seized their first real opportunity. A well-constructed move down the flank ended with Nikkita Fazzari delivering a pinpoint cross into the danger area, where Alyssa McKenzie arrived at the back post to hammer home the opener.

The finish shifted momentum firmly in favour of the Red and Black and it wasn’t long before their lead was doubled. This time Fazzari found herself on the scoresheet, cleverly timing her run to the near post and steering home a smart cross from Lauren Nada.

The Wanderers continued to pile on pressure and almost added a third when McKenzie unleashed a fierce drive across goal and even though Ally Boertje blocked the strike, the danger wasn’t cleared. The rebound fell to Ava D’Costa, who would slot in the Wanderers’ third.

The Jets were rewarded with a late consolation, Alex Collins stepped up from the spot and converted her penalty, denying the Wanderers a clean sheet in stoppage time.

The win saw an improved Wanderers capitalise on their opportunities, and storm home to a well deserved win to break a winless run that stretched for almost three months. They may finish the season second to bottom, but this game has shown that there is plenty to look forward to in Rooty Hill.

The Western Sydney Wanderers scored three goals inside the final twelve minutes to secure their position in next season’s NPL NSW Men’s Competition at Pluim Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 1 side have defeated the Central Coast Mariners Academy 3-0 in a season defining victory for the Academy side as they escaped the depths of relegation after looking all but destined for the drop two weeks ago.

The Wanderers welcomed back Kade Baccus, Antony Barbic and Leon Alizart into the starting side following a convincing three goal win over St George FC last week.

The opening twenty minutes saw both sides attempt to utilise the width of the field and stretch the opposition defence as both teams looked to start the game on the front foot.

Alaat Abdul-Rahman was presented with the game’s first chance, as a Baccus diagonal ball found Alizart who would square it to the striker. The ball would rattle the post as the Wanderers began to dominate proceedings.

Former Wanderer Noah Peacock would come within inches of opening the scoring with a wonderfully struck free kick, only for the ball to float left of the post.

The two sides went into the break level, with neither side creating more than a half chance outside of Abdul-Rahman’s strike.

Lual would see his strike saved following a Cop lobbed pass as the Wanderers would strike first in the second stanza.

The Mariners would strike back through Jai Rose and Ahmad El-Helou, as the latter would find the side netting in an attempt to break the deadlock against the momentum of the game.

It would be the Wanderers who would open proceedings, with Badolato’s switch finding Nathan Barrie who would head it across goal for Lual to tap into the net. The goal rewarded 78 minutes of unrelenting pressure from the Red and Black who felt the relief pour off their shoulders as they celebrated a monumental goal.

Moments later, the Wanderers would be awarded a penalty for a handball in the box, with Abdul-Rahman converting from the spot.

The striker would have the opportunity to grab a second, but could not recover the ball once he took it around the goalkeeper.

It would be Johnny Pavlovic who had the final say, as the young prospect would slide onto a Max Hately pass to roll in the Wanderers’ third.

With the pressure of relegation finally lifted, Western Sydney Wanderers can breathe easy knowing their place in next season’s NPL NSW is secure. This victory wasn’t just about three points, it was a statement of resilience and belief when it mattered most.

For a young side learning week by week, survival was the first step, now the challenge is to turn this relief into a foundation for growth, stability, and bigger ambitions in 2026.

The Western Sydney Wanderers Girls Academy have been crowned Football NSW Youth Club Champions  after an incredible first season, marking a historic milestone for women’s football in the region.

Launched this year as a fee-free Academy supported by the NSW Government and the Wanderers Foundation, the program has already made a significant impact on the player pathway for young female footballers in Western Sydney. In its inaugural season, 35 players progressed from the club’s Future Wander Women Program into the Academy with a further five advancing from the Pre-Academy Development Program structure.

On the pitch, the Academy sides enjoyed outstanding success across all age groups. The U14s and U16s were crowned Minor Premiers, while the U15s and U18s finished the season as runners-up. A total of 11 players earned international recognition through selection in junior national teams representing various countries, while 24 players also competed in the prestigious Emerging Matildas Tournament.

The achievement also reflects the commitment and expertise of the Academy’s coaching staff, led by Angelo Maralit and Lea Zullo (U14s), George and Jair Fernandez (U15s), Rob Bradshaw (U16s), and Adam Luzi (U18s), who have each played an integral role in the program’s early success.

Western Sydney Wanderers CEO Scott Hudson praised the accomplishment as a landmark moment for the club and wider region.

“This is a proud day for the Wanderers and for women’s football in Western Sydney,” said Hudson.

“To be crowned the Football NSW Youth Club Champions in our very first season is an outstanding achievement and highlights the potential in our region. The support of the NSW Government and the Wanderers Foundation in making this a fee-free program ensures that every young girl has the chance to chase her football dreams, regardless of financial barriers.”

Wanderers Girls Academy Technical Director Geoff Abrahams said the results underline the bright future for female football at the club.

Our players and coaches have worked tirelessly this year, and their efforts have been rewarded with incredible improvement across every youth age group, and the successful results have been a bi-product of that” said Abrahams.

“Beyond the results, it has been inspiring to see so many of our girls gain national team recognition and experience in tournaments like the Emerging Matildas. This first season has laid a strong foundation, and we are excited to continue building a world-class pathway for the next generation of Matildas.”

Abrahams and the Wanderers will now pivot their attention to the upcoming Ninja A-League season with several squad announcements to be made in the coming weeks.

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 1 side travel to the Pluim Park as they look to secure safety in a relegation decider against the Central Coast Mariners Academy.

The stage is set for one of the most dramatic finales the NPL has seen in recent years. The Central Coast Mariners and Western Sydney Wanderers’ academy outfits face off in a clash where the stakes could not be higher: survival.

90 minutes will decide which club reserves its place in next season’s competition and which one suffers the heartbreak of relegation. This isn’t just a battle of two academy sides. It’s a fight for identity and resilience, where every tackle, save, and goal carries the weight of an entire season.

It’s not all doom and gloom, as a NWS Spirit win over the Mount Druitt Town Rangers could see the loser of this clash head into a promotion/relegation play-off with the runner-up in League One.

The Wanderers have endured a tough season, with wins coming in splashes, whereas the Mariners have undoubtedly escaped what looked like guaranteed relegation following a resurgence in the latter part of the season.

The Wanderers have shown continuous growth throughout what has been a character-building season for their young prospects. Few have exemplified this more than Edmun Haddad, with the young attacking midfielder seeing his profile rise after being thrown into the deep end. Time and again, he has proven to be the catalyst behind many of the side’s brightest moments.

The last meeting between the two sides came in Round 15, ending in a 2-2 draw after an entertaining end-to-end contest. Originally scheduled for Pluim Park, the match was relocated to Wanderers Football Park due to persistent wet weather. Harper Ryles struck late to secure an equaliser, earning the Mariners a valuable point.

The Key Decider: Survival Instinct

The defining factor in this do-or-die clash won’t just be tactics or technical quality, it will be sheer willingness to survive. With relegation looming, the team that digs deeper, shows more grit in the 50/50s, and refuses to be broken in the decisive moments will prevail.

This is a game where hunger outweighs style, where second balls and last-ditch tackles matter as much as clean passing moves. Whoever embraces the battle, thrives under the pressure, and proves they want to stay up more will ultimately walk away safe.

Both teams have shown that they can keep up with the competitions best, but often fall just short of the finish line. The finish line is now just ninety minutes away, and only one team can cross it.

Expect a high stakes affair between two sides looking to survive, it will be one of the clashes of the season with both teams vying for safety.

From the opening whistle in March to the final round in late August, the Wanderers NPL side has navigated the demanding rigours of travel, training, and challenging fixtures in their inaugural season. Ambitions have been pursued, obstacles overcome, and the league table gradually taken shape across a campaign that has required both consistency and resilience from this young academy side.

Now, with the season’s end upon us, the Red and Black make one final trip to the Steel City in search for their first victory since Round 13. That win came against the Jets, who would go down 5-0 against a Wanderers outfit who have since then failed to grasp form as they look to end the season on a positive note.

Through the turbulence and tough times, there have been plenty of positives, the unearthing of many young stars has been a highlight. The likes of Miriam Zumaya, Nikkita Fazzari, Alvina Khoshaba and Lauren Nada have become regulars in a side that presents plenty of youthful potential.

The Wanderers come into this game following a disappointing result against a Northern Tigers side who flexed their dominance, maintaining majority of the possession and limiting the Wanderers to almost nothing in a 1-0 defeat.

The Jets, who are destined for a last place finish, will look to leave a lasting memory in front of their home faithful as they search for their fifth win of the season. They come into this game off the back of a 2-1 loss to Sydney University, their twenty first of the season.

The Key Decider: A Lasting Message

The defining factor in this season’s final game will extend beyond on-field tactics or individual talent; it will be the enduring impression each team leaves behind. After 25 weeks of challenges, the side that can assert its identity in the most pivotal moments will shape how their campaign is remembered, irrespective of their position on the table.

Whether it’s resilience under pressure, the courage to take risks, or the belief to keep pushing when fatigue sets in, the team that asserts its character in this final chapter will do more than just win the match. They will leave a lasting statement of who they are, particularly following a season that, by their own standards, has been less than memorable.

There is nothing to lose on Sunday Evening, so expect both sides to leave it all out on the field in a game where two sides will be desperate to collect their final points of the season.

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL Women’s side pushed the Northern Tigers all the way in a tightly contested 1-0 match, with a late corner proving the only difference on the day.

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL Women’s side showed plenty of fight in a narrow 1-0 loss to the Northern Tigers at Wanderers Football Park, with both teams determined to turn a challenging second half of the season into a strong finish in the final weeks of the competition.

The Wanderers welcomed Jade O’Brien into the starting side as they searched for their first win since Round 13.

Mischa Anderson opened proceedings inside ten minutes as Aimee Hall failed to gather the corner, to which the Wanderers failed to clear, leading to a tap in centimeters off the line.

The Tigers almost replicated their opener, driving another looping corner, this time it would be Lauren Nada who would produce a 37th minute goal line clearance to deny the visitors a second.

The Wanderers first big chance would not be presented to them until the 48th minute as Isabella Sultan would see her strike hit the post following a Nikkita Fazzari run into the box.

Another corner would cause issues as a failure to clear would see the Tigers’ strike roll across the front of goal before being cleared by the Wanderers once again.

Lily McMahon tested the Wanderers from distance, with Hall unable to hold the initial effort before quickly recovering to block the follow-up shot. The Wanderers goalkeeper stood tall again in the dying moments, pulling off a crucial one-on-one save to deny Jade McTamaney with an outstretched leg.

This would conclude what was a Tigers’ possession heavy game, where the Wanderers were forced to defend for most of the 90 minutes, leading to very little chances created compared to the visitors.

The Wanderers will be proud of their defensive efforts against one of the competition’s premier attacking sides, although they will need to ensure they do not afford the Jets as much time on the ball, as the relegation battling side will be vying to finish the season on a strong note.

The result sets up a decisive final day clash with the Jets, where the Wanderers will look to end their twelve-game winless run against the very side they last celebrated victory over.
