The Minns Labor Government and the Western Sydney Wanderers are teaming up to tackle road trauma, together sending a powerful message ahead of this weekend’s Sydney Derby: every life lost on our roads is one too many.

Marking a decade-long partnership, the annual Towards Zero Round will bring the Wanderers and Sydney FC together to put road safety front and centre, putting rivalries aside to push for safer roads across NSW.

Sadly, so far in 2025, 322 lives have been lost on NSW roads, with 60 fatal crashes in Western Sydney.

In a symbolic moment, both clubs’ goalkeepers will wear the number 0 on their jerseys, representing the Government’s long-term target of zero deaths and zero serious injuries on NSW roads by 2050.

As part of the Towards Zero Round, Nigel Smith, a member of the Road Trauma Support Group NSW, will share his story with attendees at Saturday’s derby.

Nigel’s 18-year-old son Lachlan was killed in a high-speed crash in Silverdale, south-west of Sydney in 2022. Lachlan was a passenger of a speeding vehicle and had his promising life cut tragically short.

Speeding remains the biggest killer on NSW roads, accounting for around 40 per cent of deaths every year. Sadly, in Western Sydney there were almost 100 fatal crashes between 2020-2024 where speeding was a factor.

Minister for Roads, Jenny Aitchison said:

“The Minns Labor Government is proud to stand with the Wanderers in using the power of football to deliver one clear message: road trauma is preventable.

“Every life lost on our roads is a member of a family, a teammate, a fan who will never see another game.

“I want to thank Nigel for his courage in sharing his story. Lachlan had his whole life ahead of him, and we owe it to families like his to do better.

“As we head into the busy holiday season, our message couldn’t be clearer: slow down, you’re your seatbelt correctly, put the phone away, plan your night out, and never get behind the wheel if you’re tired or impaired.”

Western Sydney Wanderers CEO Scott Hudson said:

“Our players have a responsibility as role models within the community and have a long history when it comes to championing road safety in not only Western Sydney, but across NSW.

“The Towards Zero round is a great opportunity to work closely with Sydney FC to reach as many fans as possible, and we’re proud to leverage our brand and influence to help reduce road trauma and to promote safe driving habits to the passionate football community.”

Western Sydney Wanderers FC recently hosted the 13th annual Parliamentary Friends of the Wanderers event at the Parliament of New South Wales, bringing together Members of Parliament, club representatives, and players to celebrate the positive impact of football across Western Sydney.

The Parliamentary Friends of the Wanderers is a bipartisan group of New South Wales Members of Parliament who share a passion for football and a commitment to supporting the game’s growth at both the grassroots and elite levels.

The group was established to recognise the role that sport plays in fostering social connection, promoting inclusion, and creating opportunities for young people in Western Sydney.

This year’s event was timed to coincide with the commencement of the club’s Isuzu UTE A-League Men and Ninja A-League Women’s seasons.

A number of players from both teams were in attendance, alongside club executives, and members of the wider Wanderers community. Guests had the opportunity to hear about the club’s upcoming season, community priorities, and initiatives aimed at expanding participation and engagement across the region.

The Wanderers were honoured to welcome Members of Parliament from across the political spectrum, reflecting the shared recognition of football’s unifying power and its ability to inspire the next generation of athletes and fans.

The event also served as a platform to highlight the club’s long-standing partnerships with government, community organisations, and local councils.

Western Sydney Wanderers would like to acknowledge the ongoing support of the NSW Government, whose investment and collaboration have been instrumental in delivering a range of community programs and initiatives.

These include the club’s After-School and Mobile Schools programs, as well as broader activities aimed at increasing participation among women and girls, people with disability, and multicultural and Indigenous communities.

Through these initiatives, the Wanderers continue to champion inclusion and accessibility in sport, reinforcing their commitment to using football as a vehicle for social change and community development across Western Sydney.

Western Sydney Wanderers captain Amy Harrison is making an impact both on and off the field, ensuring her hometown club, St Mary’s Eagle Vale, benefits every time she finds the back of the net.

Thanks to Turner Freeman Lawyers’ Cash for Goals initiative, Amy has chosen to direct her $1,000 per goal donation to the grassroots club where her football journey began.

This means that for every goal she scores in the 2025 season, St Mary’s Eagle Vale will receive a significant boost—helping to support young players and the club’s development.

This initiative is part of Turner Freeman Lawyers’ broader commitment to supporting football at all levels.

As Co-Major Partner of Western Sydney Wanderers FC, they have pledged to donate $250 to the Wanderers Foundation for every goal scored by the Red & Black this season. In addition, they will contribute $1,000 for every goal scored by Amy Harrison and fellow Wanderers player Juan Mata as part of their Goals for Grassroots program.

Now in its fourth year, the Cash for Goals initiative has played a crucial role in strengthening the Wanderers Foundation’s community programs, which focus on multiculturalism, inclusion for all abilities, and increasing female participation in sport.

With every goal Amy scores this season, the future of St Mary’s Eagle Vale shines a little brighter – proving that success at the highest level can still make a difference at home.

Western Sydney Wanderers FC’s Co-Major partner, Turner Freeman Lawyers, has today confirmed that they will continue their highly successful Cash for Goals initiative, supporting the Wanderers Foundation and the grassroots community in Western Sydney.

In its fourth season, the Cash for Goals initiative will help support the Wanderers Foundation’s community programs that make a positive impact across Western Sydney. The Wanderers Foundation focuses on programs that support multiculturalism, inclusion for all abilities, and girls’ participation in sport, as well as other initiatives aimed at strengthening the local community.

As part of the ongoing initiative, Turner Freeman Lawyers will donate $250 to the Wanderers Foundation for every goal scored by the Red & Black.

Additionally, for the fourth season in a row, they will commit $1,000 for any goals scored by Wanderers players Amy Harrison or Juan Mata through their Goals for Grassroots initiative.

The Goals for Grassroots program enables both players to give back to their local community clubs. Amy Harrison will be donating her $1,000 to her local club, St Mary’s Eagle Vale, further strengthening her connection with grassroots football.

Last season, Turner Freeman Lawyers raised $2000 for Harrison’s grassroots club.

“On behalf of everyone at Western Sydney Wanderers, I would like to extend our sincere thanks to Turner Freeman Lawyers for their continued support of our club and the Cash for Goals initiative,” said Hudson.

“Their ongoing commitment to the Wanderers Foundation is invaluable, helping us deliver programs that positively impact the Western Sydney community. This partnership not only enhances the connection between our club and the community but also helps us create lasting change through initiatives that support multiculturalism, inclusion, and girls’ participation in sport.”

Turner Freeman Lawyers Managing Partner NSW Armando Gardiman spoke highly of the social responsibility of the partnership.

“We are proud of our long relationship with the Western Sydney Wanderers and are pleased to be able to support the initiatives of the Wanderers Foundation with our cash for goals donations this year. The decision to support the Wanderers Foundation this year reflects the firms ongoing commitment to social responsibility and its mission to make a small difference to the lives of Australians aggrieved by injury or disadvantage,” said Gardiman.

“We believe all people deserve access to community sports and hope our donation will go to fund sporting programs and services for disadvantaged groups in our community.”
